Letter Supporting Class 1 Air Quality Re-designation

The following letter, in support of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewas' proposal to the EPA for Class 1 Air Quality Re-designation for the reservation, was sent to the Bad River Band, as well as to the Ashland Daily Press, Susan Hedman of the EPA, and Bart Sponseller, deputy division administrator for the Air, Waste and Remediation & Redevelopment Division of the Wisconsin DNR.

The letter was printed as a letter to the editor by the Ashland Daily Press (APG Media) on March 27.

New Members Needed for the State League (LWVWI) Board of Directors

We need your help! We need new members for the State Board. We are seeking diversity of all types ... geographic, demographic, ethnic... and we need some new faces as well.

Who in your organization is an emerging leader? Who needs a new challenge to stay involved and committed to the League? Help keep the League strong in Wisconsin by nominating yourself or another leader for State Board!

The state Nominating Committee is accepting nominations until February 27 for State League Board of Directors and 2015-16 Nominating Committee. Local Leagues and individual members may nominate someone, and self-nominations are welcome! The State Board is an exciting opportunity to help guide the League at the policy level with staff support. 

For your information, the State Board meets six times per year, usually on a Saturday in Madison. In-person attendance is encouraged, but occasional attendance by conference call is also acceptable. Elected directors serve for a two-year term. Reimbursement for your travel expenses is available.

Update on Lake Superior Barrels Project December 18th

Since the mid 1990’s, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has been researching and conducting investigations on approximately 1,450 55-gallon barrels dumped into Gichigami (Lake Superior) by the US Army between 1959 and 1962 in collaboration with the Army Corp of Engineers and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). It is the goal and responsibility of the Red Cliff Band to fully characterize the type and extent of Department of Defense wastes, which may have impacts on the natural resources within the Ceded Territory. The Red Cliff Band is dedicated to working with federal agencies to clean up, restore and protect the ecosystems of the Ceded Territory. The Red Cliff Band is also committed to the economy, natural resources, and cultural uses within Chippewa Ceded Territory and to determine if further remedial work is required to preserve and protect the rich natural resources of Gichigami.
 
Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has a Cooperative Agreement with Army Corp of Engineers to provide an update to area stakeholders who also have a vested interest in this project. A PowerPoint program will be presented and also any questions that may arise will be answered. These informational sessions are open to the public.
